Hike through a ferny bottomland, and cross a curving footbridge over a creek that pours forth from an even bigger spring. The trail then begins to wind through moss and lichen-covered lava outcroppings.

Watch out for mountain bikers in this area as the route is narrow. Pass through a vine maple and hazel thicket to arrive at the first of several high viewpoints over the surging river.

Incense cedars become part of the forest mix. The pool is actually 30 feet deep in the middle, but appears deceptively shallow. Bear in mind that water temperatures vary between 37 and 42 degrees, cold enough to induce sudden shock if you decide to take a dip.

Regardless of the route you choose, arrive early before 8am to avoid crowds. The Tamolitch Blue Pool hike starts at the entrance of an old-growth forest. Once you reach the Blue Pool you have two options — sit down and enjoy the views before turning back OR head down toward the embankment and get closer to the crystal clear water.

From this trailhead it is a 2 mile hike to Tamolitch Blue Pool. The upper access point is at Carmen Reservoir. From here it is a 3 mile hike down to Tamolitch Blue Pool. This is a harder trailhead to find. We recommend you access the lower trailhead. They can help you arrange a shuttle for a one way 5, 6 or 9 mile hike. The longest hike includes Clear Lake. Shuttles daily at and by appointment. If you are hiking the trail you can access this by either hiking down approx.

There is free parking at both sites. Cliff jumping into the pool is also discouraged — hypothermia is easy to get in water this cold and people have died here from it.

This is also a very difficult place to get emergency crews in to help you should you have an accident — like a mis-jump or another health issue caused from the impact or cold.
