How long are penalties in roller derby

An upright Skater is as Skater who is not down. One hand on the floor is not considered down. Proximity means not more than 10 ft apart, as measured from the hips parallel to the inside track boundary see graphic below , in front of or behind the nearest Pack Skater.

Note the Pack is defined only by Blockers, not Jammers. Additionally, Skaters who are penalized are considered no longer on the track and do not count for Pack definition. No Pack means there is no group of in-bounds and upright Blockers from both teams skating within 10 ft of each other, or where there are two or more equally numbers groups of Blockers not skating within 10 ft of each other.

In other words, there can only be one Pack; if there are two groups of equal numbers of skaters from both teams that are more than 10 ft apart, the Pack is split. No, but the Engagement Zone depends on the Pack. The Engagement Zone is the area of the track in which it is legal for Blockers to engage or be engaged. Engaging means any sort of interaction with another Skater, including blocks and assists. The Engagement Zone extends forward and backward 20 ft from the foremost and rearmost Pack Skaters, respectively.

All Blockers from both Teams must work to maintain a Pack. The degrees in front of me is a legal hit and block zone. The illustration below shows the hit zones in green and the no hit zones in red. Hopefully, gaining a better understanding of the how the directional penalties work will ideally help you have fewer of them called on you.

Examples include, but are not limited to:. Failure to abide by Governing Body policies during the game pertaining to Skaters, Team Staff, and the immediate play area. Actions which seriously undermine the legitimacy of the sport or display a lack of respect for the sport, its execution, and those who contribute to it may also be penalized.

Upon completion of the correct verbal cue and hand signal from an Official, the penalized Skater must immediately leave the track. Skaters serve 30 seconds of Jam time for each penalty assessed to them.

The final 10 seconds of their penalty time must be served while standing. If a Skater does not stand in a manner that makes it clear to Officials, Skaters, and spectators that they are serving their final 10 seconds, their timing stops until they stand. If a Skater sits in the Penalty Box between Jams, their time does not start until the beginning of the following Jam. If a Skater is assessed a penalty but unable to serve it—for example, due to an injury or an equipment malfunction—a substitute may serve in their place once the Jam ends.

In this case, the Skater who was unable to serve their own penalty may not skate for the following three Jams. Skaters may remove their mouthguard, but no other protective gear, while seated in the Penalty Box. Skaters must replace their mouthguard prior to leaving the Penalty Box. Nobody may enter the Penalty Box except for Officials, and Skaters who are serving penalties.

No more than two Blockers for the same team may sit in the Penalty Box at the same time. If a third Blocker reports to the Penalty Box while two Blockers for their team are seated, the third Blocker will be placed in queue and instructed to return to play.

If a Blocker is standing in the Penalty Box, another Blocker may sit in the open seat. A Blocker in queue may return to the Penalty Box when there is space in the Penalty Box, unless doing so would destroy the Pack. A Blocker must immediately return if instructed to do so by an Official. Once a Blocker in queue returns to the track, they should be treated like any other unpenalized Blocker.

A Jammer may have their penalty time shortened if the other Jammer also receives a penalty. In this case, the two Jammers serve as little time as possible so long as:. Jammers who are to be released due to the other Jammer sitting should be released immediately once the other Jammer sits.

If one Jammer sits between Jams, the other Jammer should be released at the start of the next Jam. If both Jammers sit simultaneously, they will both be released immediately. If both Jammers sit between Jams, they should be released at the start of the next Jam. If a third player or more is penalized, the player or players committing the penalty must leave the track and be replaced by a substitute. The penalized skater will begin serving his penalty time when one of the skaters in the penalty box returns to the track.

At such a time, the substitute will return to the bench. Banishment If any player accumulates a total of eight 8 minutes in penalties during one game he or she is automatically ruled out of the game and his or her substitute will spend the time of the last penalty in the penalty box.

Overtime There can be no tie games. If at the end of the eighth period the score is tied, the game will go into overtime in the following manner: The women and men will alternate five-minute skating periods until a point is scored.

The team scoring the first point will be declared the winner. Scoring Points are scored as follows: A jammer receives one point for every member of the opposing team he or she passes, every time he or she laps the field within 60 seconds.

If a blocker commits a foul on a jam skater, the jam skater will be awarded the point that he or she is attempting to score. If, in the opinion of an official, there is a deliberate penalty against a jamming skater to prevent that skater from scoring, and this jam would determine the games' outcome, the official may award up to five points on the jam.

The determining factor would be the score differential at the time of the jam. The injured team's score could not be raised higher than the fouling opponent. A skater forced into the infield may not better the position he was in when he left the track. A skater receiving a penalty becomes ineligible to either score or be scored on. A fouled skater cannot be passed for a point unless he or she has had sufficient time to recover from the foul.

No jam can be considered a legal jam with more than five skaters on the track from each team. A skater with skate trouble cannot be passed for a point.
